Several area students have been awarded scholarships to help cover the cost of healthcare education. An outstanding group of students applied for the Healthcare Scholarships and Diversity Scholarship in 2022! The students wrote an essay about their career path along with strengths and personal goals to support the healthcare needs of FHN’s service area. The committee invited the top candidates to interview. After the interviews, three Healthcare Scholarship applicants were chosen to receive a $1,000 scholarship and one Diversity applicant was chosen to receive a $1,000 scholarship. Gateway From Student to Professional Nursing Program Applications Open Through Jan. 27 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The Gateway From Student to Professional Nursing Program will be returning in the summer of 2023. This program is for nursing students entering their final year of an associate or baccalaureate program. This program will provide students with a 10-week internship to develop and expand their clinical knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and task performance through exposure to various patient-care experiences in the hospital setting. Interns will work full-time hours with an experienced nurse mentor and assume shared responsibility for a patient assignment. If you know someone who may be interested in this program or would like additional information, please visit the careers section of the FHN website at www.fhn.org and look for “Nurse Internship (Summer)”. January is … Days to Note: The Iroquois Midwinter Ceremony is observed in January and February. The event lasts for 8 days, and each day is dedicated to an event such as Tobacco Invocation. January is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History Month in the United Kingdom. It was initiated in February 2005 by Schools OUT as an opportunity for all to learn more about the lives of LGBT people in Britain and Northern Ireland. Coptic and Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate Timkat/Theophany on January 20. The church associates Theophany with the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. January 22 is the Chinese New Year, ushering in the year of the Rabbit. This is the year 4721 in the Chinese Lunar calendar and the most important holiday. It is a three-day holiday in China and Hong Kong. People clean and decorate their homes with the 5
lucky signs of happiness; new clothes are worn and even the poorest buy new shoes, for it is considered bad luck to step down on the ground into old shoes. The Vietnamese call it the Tet Festival. The Korean New Year celebration, Seollal, begins January 22 and lasts three days. During this time, many Koreans visit family, perform ancestral rites, eat traditional food, and play
folk games. Additionally, children often receive money from their elders. The people of Scotland and Ireland celebrate Robert Burns’ Night on January 25. Robert Burns’ Nigh honors Scotland’s national poet, born in 1759. The night is celebrated by the Scots with a sit-down “Burns Supper” and with speeches, poetry, and song. |
