Congratulations to December 2022’s FHN PRIDE Champions!

Trista Timpe (IT Department) nominated by Kaydra Heller. Trista was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. OurFHN currently provides written instructions in English and Spanish. Tirsta works in the IT Department and Kaydra needed assistance to provide the patient written discharge instructions in his native language. Kaydra writes that Trista took the time to reach out to our compliance department and assist with translating patient discharge instructions into the Arabic language. With Trista’s assistance, the patient was able to receive all of his education and instructions via verbal and written instruction at the time of discharge. Kaydra writes, “The patient was very appreciative of the time and effort put forth for his instructions to be made available in written Arabic. This action demonstrates Trista’s commitment to the PRIDE standards and ensuring patient support for access.”

Jodi Feiner (Admitting Department) nominated by Donna Carter. Jodi was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Donna writes that Jodi was looking for change for a $5 bill. While trying to help her find change, Donna discovered she was trying to get bus fare for one of our patients who was able to make it to FHN, but did not have bus fare to get back home. Donna writes, “Jodi not only was kind enough to give the patient money to return home, but to make sure that there was exact change so the patient had no further issues with transportation home.”

Mary (Cathy) Krahmer (MRI) nominated by Megan Loomis. Cathy was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Megan writes that Cathy came in on a weekend to do an MRI for another patient. She called MRI because a patient had an MRCP ordered to be completed, and if the test was okay, the patient would be able to be discharged that day. The patient could not have anything to eat or drink by mouth for 6 hours prior to the MRI; however, the patient had eaten breakfast that morning. Cathy’s shift ended at 3 p.m. that day, and with needing to have 6 hours without food or drink prior to the MRI, would have meant that the MRI could not start until 3 p.m. Megan writes, “Cathy graciously offered to stay past her scheduled time to complete this patient’s test so the patient could be discharged in a timely manner.”

Others nominated this month include Teri Bland, Nicole Clem, Hailey Auer, Megan Thede, Joanne Benson, Annette Geilenfeldt, Melissa Larson, Betsy Onley, Tina Lingle, and Rainn James. Continue Delivering Excellence: Every Patient, Every Time! Take PRIDE in what you do at FHN!

Please keep your eyes open for others demonstrating our PRIDE standards and nominate them for PRIDE Champion or our Golden Globe recognition program for leaders! Be sure to include details in your nomination to ensure their excellence is portrayed as you have witnessed it. Thank you!

FHN Awards Four Healthcare Scholarships

Four area students have been awarded scholarships to help cover the cost of healthcare education. An outstanding group of students applied for the Healthcare Scholarship and Diversity Scholarship this year.

The Iroquois Midwinter Ceremony is observed in January and February. The event lasts for 8 days, and each day is dedicated to an event such as Tobacco Invocation.

January is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender History Month in the United Kingdom. It was initiated in February 2005 by Schools OUT as an opportunity for all to learn more about the lives of LGBT people in Britain and Northern Ireland.

The United States celebrates Black History Month in February. Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of Black history, is greatly owed to Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who first launched “Negro History Week” in 1926. Woodson chose February because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly impacted the American Black population, Abraham Lincoln (president of the United States who freed slaves during the Civil War) and Frederick Douglass (who worked to end slavery) both have birthdays in February. The purpose of this month is to recognize the contributions of Black Americans and develop a better understanding of the Black experience.

February also is Black History Month in Canada. In December, 1995, the Parliament of Canada recognized February as Black History Month following a motion introduced by the first African Canadian woman elected to Parliament, Jean Augustine. The presence of peoples of African descent in Canada dates back further than Samuel de Champlain’s first voyage down the St. Lawrence River.

Buffalo dances are performed in Hopi reserves during the January – February Hopi Holy Cycle. Days vary according to each community.

People of the Hindu faith celebrate Basant Panchami on January 26. In northern India, the day heralds the approach of spring, and yellow-colored clothes are symbolically worn. Even the food is colored yellow using saffron. The festival honors Saraswati, the Goddess of Learning, Wisdom, and the Creative Arts.

January 30 is Sadeh for Iranians and people of the Zoroastrian faith. Sadeh in Persian means hundred and refers to one hundred days and nights past the end of summer in ancient Persia/Iran. Sadeh is a mid-winter festival where bonfires are lit to honor fire and to defeat the forces of darkness, frost, and cold. People gather and pray, and then they will hold each others’ hands, form a circle and dance around the fire.
