Congratulations to January 2023’s FHN PRIDE Champions!

Shaye Yoakum (Hospice) nominated by Rebecca Rath. Shaye was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Rebecca nominated Shaye for her support to the hospice team. Rebecca writes that Shaye was visiting a patient who was terminally ill, and the patient was having a difficult time breathing. Shaye was patient-centered and respectful during this visit. She educated the patient’s family on comfort-care symptom management and how to administer medications timely to assist the patient. She contacted the patient’s doctor and had medication doses adjusted and care orders adjusted to help the patient maintain comfort. She also spent 4 hours with the patient and patient’s family, educating them on the POLST Form, a form that tells the patient’s wishes and addresses code status of a “full code” versus “do not resuscitate.” She continued to respect the patient’s and family’s wishes and stayed close to the patient to assist with carrying out those wishes. Rebecca writes, “Shaye delivered excellence and was engaged during this visit. She kept her charge nurse updated. Much support was provided to this patient and family.”

Bethany Dickman (Cardiac Cath Lab) nominated by Angela Zuberbuhler and Rebecca Chenong. Bethany was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Angela writes that a patient was  scheduled for a procedure just after a holiday weekend. The patient was called on Friday to ensure she was ready for her procedure on Tuesday. On Friday, the patient felt ill. Instead of canceling the procedure, Bethany asked the patient if she would like to wait until Monday to see how she was feeling. Despite having the day off on Monday, Bethany came into the cath lab and called the patient to see if she was feeling better for her procedure. Angela writes, “No one asked Bethany to do this, it is just one small example of all the things she does to keep everything running smoothly!” Rebecca nominated Bethany for taking on the role of being a super-user for their department data. This data is collected on every patient having an angiogram at FHN, then submitted to a database to monitor quality metrics and improve patient outcomes. Rebecca writes, “It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to make sure that all of the data is collected and submitted properly and in a timely fashion. Thanks for all you do, Bethany!”

Diane Kunz (Central Supply) nominated by Michelle Kelly. Diane was nominated for showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Michelle nominated Diane for always providing a quick response with crash cart replacement and understanding the overall needs of every department in the hospital. Michelle also nominated Diane for her attention to detail with supply counts and expiration dates. She writes that Diane always brings forward ideas for supply chain improvement and identifies concerns in a timely manner. Michelle states, “Diane will help in any way she can and goes above and beyond, especially during times of high census. She wants all processes to work smoothly and is always in support of collaboration.”

Others nominated this month include: Renee Westaby, Kristen Simpson, Teresa Hawley, Haley Auer, Rebecca Chenong, Angela Zuberbuhler, Glenna Halley Hill, Shirley Bowen, Faye Mullins, Brittany Mordini, Lucy Roloff, Amanda Paulsen, Tracy Sellers, Marilyn Wagner, Ashely Seal, Abby Sadler, Bonnie Lowry, Megan Thede, Theresa Whitmore, Sally Healy, and Heather Shank.

Days to Note:

World Birth Defects Day March 3

National Doctors’ Day March 30

March is Women’s History Month in the United States and the United Kingdom. National Women’s History Month began as a single week and as a local event. In 1978, Sonoma County, California, sponsored a women’s history week to promote the teaching of women’s history. The week of March 8 was selected to include “International Women’s Day.” This day is rooted in such ideas and events as a woman’s right to vote and a woman’s right to work, women’s and the U.N. Charter declaration of gender equality at the end of World War II. The day is an occasion to review how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace, and development. In 1981, Congress passed a resolution making the week a national celebration, and in 1987 expanded it to a full month.

March 1 is St. David’s Day in Wales. He is the patron saint of Wales and died on this day.

People of the Baha’i’ faith begin Ala, a 19-day fast, on March 2. The nineteenth and final month in the Baha’i’ calendar is the time of a 19-day fast in preparation of their new year, Now Ruz. The English translation of Ala (Arabic) is Loftiness.

March 3 is the World Day of Prayer. Held on the first Friday of March, the World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who came together in 1927 to observe a common day of prayer each year. It is a movement initiated and carried out by women in more than 170 countries and regions, bringing together women of various races, cultures, and traditions in closer fellowship, understanding, and action throughout the year.

People of the Sikh and Hindu faiths celebrate Holi on March 7. According to myth, a tyrannical king’s son, Pralad, refused to worship his father as God and was condemned to death by burning. However, the boy’s aunt, named Holika, transferred her own immunity from fire to Pralad, and burned to death in his place. This festival of color celebrates Spring, where people play with liquid and powdered colors, light bonfires and blow horns to celebrate the destruction of Holika.

March 7 is Purim for people of the Jewish faith. Purim is known as the Feast of Lots, which celebrates the deliverance of Jews in Persia from the machinations of Haman. Jews dress in costume and give gifts of food to each other.

Buddhists and the people of Tibet celebrate the Butter Lamp Festival on March 7. To celebrate Shakyamuni’s victory over non-Buddhist opponents in 1409, Lord Neu Dzong, a noted patron of Tsongkapa, illuminated numerous butter lamps. The tradition has since then flourished.

March 8 is Hola Mohalla for people of the Sikh faith. Mock battles are fought and martial arts are displayed in honor of Guru Gobind Singh, who took to armed struggle against tyranny.
