League of Women Voters and Local NAACP Host FHN Presentation on Regional Healthcare Needs, Including Emphasis on Minority Care |
|
The League of Women Voters of Freeport and the Freeport branch of the NAACP are hosting a presentation from FHN outlining local healthcare needs as identified in the FHN Community Health Needs Assessment in December 2022. The event will take place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 28 at FHN Family Healthcare Center - Burchard Hills, 1010 W. Fairway Drive in Freeport.
FHN Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Nursing Officer Kathryn J. Martinez, DHA, MSN, RN, FACHE will review the results of the FHN Community Health Needs Assessment, a Federally required data collection and survey project that must be undertaken every three years, and FHN's planned activities to address those needs. There will be plenty of time for questions, which will be answered by Martinez as well as FHN Family Nurse Practitioner Tamisha Bonvillain, FNP-BC, IBCLC. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this important session.
Input for FHN's Assessment was collected from area leaders as well as the community at large across a broad range of demographics and interests. Topics addressed included perspectives on a range of issues that affect the area's health and well-being, such as community resources, barriers to care, and reasons for various types of disease and mortality. Areas for focus that were identified were prioritized into three primary categories by FHN's Care Transitions Steering Committee: community identified needs, health and well-being, and chronic disease management. Specific tactics for the next three years have been slated for implementation to address these focus areas.
Recognizing that the national healthcare system should provide a basic level of quality care at an affordable cost for all residents, ensuring quality healthcare for all Americans is one of nine priorities identified by the National League of Women Voters. Basic care includes disease prevention, primary care (including prenatal and reproductive health), acute long-term care, and mental health care, as well as health promotion and education.
For more information on this priority and how to help, as well as the other eight outlined by the League - including topics such as voting rights, immigration, climate challenges, and gun violence - visit the national website. |

March is Women’s History Month in the United
States and the United Kingdom. National Women’s History Month began as a
single week and as a local event. In 1978, Sonoma County, California,
sponsored a women’s history week to promote the teaching of women’s
history. The week of March 8 was selected to include “International
Women’s Day.” This day is rooted in such ideas and events as a woman’s
right to vote and a woman’s right to work, women’s and the U.N. Charter
declaration of gender equality at the end of World War II. The day is an
occasion to review how far women have come in their struggle for
equality, peace, and development. In 1981, Congress passed a resolution
making the week a national celebration, and in 1987 expanded it to a
full month.
Ramadan begins today (March 23) for people of the Islamic faith. This is the holiest month in the Islamic year and it begins at the sighting of the new moon. It commemorates the period during which Prophet Mohammad received divine revelations. Observing Muslims fast between the hours of sunrise and sunset during the entire month, read the Qu’ran and worship in the mosque or at home.
Christians celebrate Annunciation on March 25. It commemorates the day Jesus’ mother, Mary, was visited by an angel to inform her that she was blessed and chosen to be the mother of Christ.
March 25 is Evangelismou in Greece. The Greeks combined the national Independence Day with the Annunciation and what was earlier believed to be the spring equinox. They wear traditional clothes and celebrate with speeches and folk dancing.
People of the Zoroastrian faith celebrate the Birth of Prophet Zarathustra on March 26. Zarathustra (Zoroaster in Greek; Zarthosht in India and Persia) is the founder of the Zoroastrian religion dating back to sometime between 1500 and 1000 BC. Zoroastrianism became the state religion of various Persian empires until the 7th century AD. When Arabs, followers of Islam, invaded Persia in 650 AD, a small number of Zoroastrians fled to India, where most are concentrated today.
