Congratulations to February 2023’s FHN PRIDE Champions!

Angela Zuberbuhler (Cath Lab) nominated by Bethany Dickman. Angela was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Bethany writes that Angela received a patient from the Emergency Department in need of an urgent angiogram. During the angiogram, the patient had a condition change with chest pain and other symptoms. Angela remained by the patient’s side and continued to comfort the patient. Even though Angela was very concerned about the patient’s condition change, she remained calm. The procedure was completed and the patient’s condition stabilized. After the procedure, Angela continued to comfort the patient. Bethany writes, “I don’t’ think Angela realizes how much the way she responded to the situation helped this patient. Angela continued to follow and check up on this patient throughout her hospital stay as well as after discharge. Angela has a heart of gold and is a stellar nurse to work with!”

Ellen Rice (Medical Records/Coding) nominated by Kristin Piper. Ellen was nominated for showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Kristin writes that Ellen demonstrates the FHN PRIDE Standards by frequently sharing free educational resources with the Coding Department, including webinar opportunities that are timely and relevant to keep everyone compliant on the latest coding rules and regulations. Kristin states that most of these webinars cost between $150-$200, but because of Ellen, they are at no cost to their department. Ellen also sends many resources for free continuing education credits to the coding department. Kristin writes, “Ellen’s diligence with finding and sharing free webinars has been phenomenal. She helps to keep coding up to date and compliant with HIPAA guidelines. She connects with her co-workers, promotes quality, and communicates respectfully with all of us.”

Jason Kornfeind (Cath Lab) nominated by Bethany Dickman. Jason was nominated for showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Bethany writes that Jason has been the only radiology technician in the Cath Lab for several months. He scrubs in for every procedure with the physician, and he must learn the preferences for every physician doing procedures. He completes all of the billing for each procedure, orders all necessary supplies, restocks those supplies, and monitors expiration dates, along with many other small details throughout the day that are typically unnoticed. He does all of this and checks with the nurses to help them with their workloads as well. Bethany writes, “Jason is such a valuable asset to the Cath Lab team, and we wouldn’t get through the day without his drive, dedication, and work ethic.”

Others nominated this month include Marieta Semini, Heather Penticoff, Haley Auer, Shevawn Svehla, Kristen Andrews, Rebecca Chenong, BH Family Practice, Amanda Paulsen, Melissa Steien, Shelly Kappes, Jeannette Law, Ashley Woodruff, Sue Brinkman, Rachel Schwab, Breaunna Lundquist, Megan Loomis, & Brandi Wilhelms

Continue Delivering Excellence: Every Patient, Every Time! Take PRIDE in what you do at FHN!

Please keep your eyes open for others demonstrating our PRIDE standards and nominate them for PRIDE Champion or our Golden Globe recognition program for leaders! Be sure to include details in your nomination to ensure their excellence is portrayed as you have witnessed it. Thank you!

March is Women’s History Month in the United States and the United Kingdom. National Women’s History Month began as a single week and as a local event. In 1978, Sonoma County, California, sponsored a women’s history week to promote the teaching of women’s history. The week of March 8 was selected to include “International Women’s Day.” This day is rooted in such ideas and events as a woman’s right to vote and a woman’s right to work, women’s and the U.N. Charter declaration of gender equality at the end of World War II. The day is an occasion to review how far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace, and development. In 1981, Congress passed a resolution making the week a national celebration, and in 1987 expanded it to a full month.

April is Multicultural Communications Month. Multicultural communications may seem difficult at first – differences in languages, backgrounds, customs, and the like all seem a challenge. By learning more about our different cultures, it becomes easier to interact. This month has been dedicated to further this cause.

Ramadan continues through April 22 for people of the Islamic faith. This is the holiest month in the Islamic year and it begins at the sighting of the new moon. It commemorates the period during which Prophet Mohammad received divine revelations. Observing Muslims fast between the hours of sunrise and sunset during the entire month, read the Qu’ran and worship in the mosque or at home.

People of the Hindu faith celebrate Ram Navami today (March 30). The holiday celebrates the birthday of Rama, the seventh incarnation of God Vishnu. Hindus read the Ramayan, a Hindu epic, which tells the story of Rama, during the previous eight days.

April 1 is Farvardin for the people of Iran. It is the 13th day after Nowruz or New Year. The number 13 is considered an unlucky number for the Persians, and therefore everyone leaves home for the day to go on picnics or trips.

Christians observe Palm Sunday on April 2. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and was cheered by crowds who strew palm branches in his path. It is observed with worship services and parades using palm branches.

People of the Jain faith celebrate Mahavira Jayanti on April 4. The day celebrates the birthday of Lord Mahavira, who was the 24th leader of the Jain religion and born around 599 BC.

The people of China and Taiwan celebrate the Ch’ing Ming Festival on April 5. It is a national holiday when graves are visited to ask for the blessings of the departed spirits.
