Congratulations to May 2023’s FHN PRIDE Champions!

Jeremy Heller (FHN Hospice) nominated by Rebecca Rath. Jeremy was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Rebecca nominated Jeremy for his willingness to always step in and help out whenever needed. He joined the FHN Hospice team a year ago and is the volunteer coordinator and chaplain. Recently, she recognized him for providing the Blessing of the Hands Ceremony at Nurses Night Out. Rebecca writes that he graciously stepped up and covered the need. When he accepted doing this service, he missed his daughter’s track sectional meet, but was willing to provide support to our FHN teammates. He has also been asked to fill in for the Grief Support Group when the Hospice Social Worker was unable to attend. Jeremy also has been working hard to rebuild the volunteer staff and train new volunteers for hospice. Rebecca writes that he also goes above and beyond his duties by “being the office handyman and fixing closet doors, broken handles, and even saving staff from a spider.” Jeremy helps hospice patients and families providing spiritual support and a calm assurance as our patients transition from this journey of life to the next. Rebecca states, “I feel he is such a blessing to our FHN family.”

Julie Edler (Lena) nominated by Kim Oneill. Julie was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Kim recognized Julie for the care she provided a patient in regards to lab draws. The patient has a history in which it is difficult to obtain lab draws due to his cognitive state. When the patient is to have labs drawn, Julie will make sure to have a warm compress available and put it in place. She then has the patient’s spouse hold his hand and another staff member hold the other hand. Julie will sing the song “Jingle Bells” with the patient until the procedure is complete. Kim writes, “The steps she takes shows how engaged she is with the patient.”

Pam Stichter (Radiology) nominated by Sharon Drake. Pam was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Sharon writes that Pam took a call that a person needed assistance getting out of a vehicle at the front doors. The person who needed assistance was just trying to pick up something left for a family member. Pam made multiple trips in and out of the building to resolve the issue and even got a wheelchair and assisted the visitor to the restroom and back to their vehicle. Sharon writes, “This took quite a bit of time out of her regular day and she went above and beyond helping out this person.”

Others nominated this month include: Benjamin Fuller, Brittney Brown, Penny Heckman, Grace Allison, Amelia Klavenga, Kendra Lindsay, and Alyssa Peterson.

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month across the United States, Canada, and Australia. LGBT Pride events are celebrated by communities across Canada and the United States on different dates from June through early August. There is a Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney, Australia each February/March. During this time, people find they are not alone and can take pride in their community’s history. The most significant date in LGBT history occurring in June is the three-day protest in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, an event that marked the first time the gay community joined together to fight for its rights, thereby gaining national attention. The anniversary of this event was one of the reasons June was chosen as the nationally proclaimed month to celebrate LGBT Pride.

Canada celebrates National Indigenous History Month in June, as declared by the Canadian Parliament in 2009. It is a tribute to the heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities across Canada. It is an opportunity not only to recognize the historic contributions of Indigenous peoples to the development of Canada, but also the strength of present-day Indigenous communities and their promise for the future.

In the United States, June is National Caribbean American Heritage Month. Proclaimed in May 2011 by the U.S. President, it commemorates a time to celebrate the history and culture of Caribbean Americans.

North American Indigenous people celebrate the July – August Sun Dance Ritual in June. For many tribes of the Plains Indians, the Sun Dance was a major communal religious ceremony. Generally held in early summer, the four-day dance ceremony involves sacrifice and supplication to ensure harmony between all living beings.

Some Indigenous Oklahoma tribes perform the July-August Green Corn Ceremony this month as a time of renewal. The ceremony involves participation in sweatlodge ceremonies, dances, offerings, and feasting.

People of the Zoroastrian faith celebrate Gahambar Maidyoshem June 29 through July 3. The holiday honors the creation of animals, and is a time for the equitable sharing of food.

July 1 is Canada Day in Canada. On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act created the Canadian federal government. The BNA proclaimed “one Dominion under the name of Canada,” hence the original title of the holiday, Dominion Day. It was officially renamed by an act of Parliament on October 27, 1982.

The people of Hong Kong celebrate HKSAR Establishment Day on July 1. Hong Kong was a British colony ruled by a British Governor until it was reunited with China as a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China on July 1, 1997.

July 3 is Wassana / Dhamma Day for Buddhists. The day marks the beginning of the three-month Rains Retreat for self-examination and peace-making for monks and nuns. It also celebrates Buddha’s first teaching.

People of the Hindu faith celebrate Guru Purnima on July 3. Disciples revere and honor their Gurus (spiritual masters).

In Australia, July 3 is NAIDOC, which stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. A week-long celebration around the country during the first week in July focuses on the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4. In 1776, the 13 colonies signed the Declaration of Independence proclaiming their separation from England and formed the United States of America. It is celebrated with picnics, fireworks, parades, and outdoor activities.
