Walk with a Doc
8 a.m.
Krape Park, 1799 S. Park Boulevard, Freeport
Free family- and pet-friendly walk and chat led by FHN providers and health professionals. Meet the group by the concession stand for this safe, fun, and FREE way to spend 45-60 minutes as you get some steps, learn about health, and meet new friends. Safe Sitter Essentials® with CPR - CLASS FULL
9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.,
FHN Memorial Hospital, 1045 W. Stephenson Street, Freeport
Class designed to prepare students in grades 6 – 8 to be safe when they’re home alone or babysitting. Class size is limited to 8 to accommodate COVID-19 safety precautions. Full-day course is $50, which includes the Safe Sitter Essentials Student Handbook and completion card and basic CPR skill practice.

Sports Physical Clinic
3 – 5 p.m.
Warren High School, 311 S. Water Street, Warren
Call 815-947-3211 to schedule an appointment. Forms (available at www.fhn.org/
SportsPhysical) must be completed and signed prior to arriving for physical. $25 fee (cash or check only) will be donated back to Warren High School. These exams meet Illinois eligibility requirements for all sports and are good through the 2023-24 school year. These exams also meet Wisconsin eligibility requirements.
 
Prenatal Classes for Spanish Speaking Families
5 - 8:30 p.m.
Conference Dining Room at FHN Memorial Hospital Lower Level.
Taught by OB Registered Nurse Juana Penaloza, these classes provide information about pregnancy, labor, delivery, cesarean section, and postpartum recovery. Register at https://www.fhn.org/

FHN’s Healthy Heart Hustle 5K
7 a.m. registration
FHN Family Healthcare Center – Burchard Hills, 1010 W. Fairway Drive, Freeport
Socially distanced, rolling start 5K run begins at 8 a.m. The Victory Lap will be held immediately following the 5K start. Proceeds from the race will benefit heart patients in northwest Illinois through the FHN Cardiology Department. Advance online registration is $35/adults and $10/ages 17 and under Race Day Registration is $35/adults. A virtual 5K option also is available. For more details or to sign up, visit www.fhn.org/5k

Learn About Cancer Care Centered on You at FHN Event

Learning of a cancer diagnosis may be some of the most frightening news a person can get. Having a local support and care team can make a huge difference. Join FHN for a special Speaker Series event on comprehensive cancer care available right here in Freeport.

  

Leonard C. Ferguson Cancer Center at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport Director Risa Tyler, RN, BSN will talk about new state-of-the-art treatments available at the center at a free event beginning at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 19 at the FHN Family Healthcare Center – Burchard Hills, 1010 W. Fairway Drive in Freeport.

  

There is no charge to attend this event, but registration is requested online at www.fhn.org.

North American Indigenous people celebrate the July – August Sun Dance Ritual in June. For many tribes of the Plains Indians, the Sun Dance was a major communal religious ceremony. Generally held in early summer, the four-day dance ceremony involves sacrifice and supplication to ensure harmony between all living beings.

 

Some Indigenous Oklahoma tribes perform the July-August Green Corn Ceremony this month as a time of renewal. The ceremony involves participation in sweatlodge ceremonies, dances, offerings, and feasting.

 

The people of Tibet and people of the Buddhist faith celebrate the Dalai Lama’s Birthday on July 6. His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people. Born to a peasant family in northeastern Tibet, he was recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama (Mongolian for Ocean of Wisdom).

 

July 7 is celebrated by the Japanese as Tanabata. Meaning Seven Evenings, it is a star festival, derived from Obon traditions and the Chinese star festival, Qi Xi. The festival is usually held on July 7 and celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). The Milky Way, a river made from stars that cross the sky, separates these lovers. They are allowed to meet only once a year on this special day, the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.

 

People of the Baha’i’ faith observe the Martyrdom of the Bab July 10. The Bab was executed at the age of 31 by a firing squad in Tabriz in 1850 AD.

 

Imamat Day is celebrated July 11 by Ismalis on the day that the Imamat or religious leader transferred from the past Imam to the present Aga Khan.

 

July 11 marks the beginning of the three-day Nadaam Festival in Mongolia. Men compete in the Three Manly national sports of archery, wrestling, and horse riding.

 

The people of North Ireland commemorate the Battle of Boyne on July 12. England’s William III defeated the deposed King of England and Scotland at the Battle of Boyne in Ireland. After the battle, which took place on July 1, 1690, James was forced to flee to France.
