July 25
Prenatal Class(Session 1)
5 – 8 p.m.
The FHN/Stephenson County Health Department series of 3 prenatal classes is offered to all regardless of their number of weeks gestation, however, they do correlate a bit with how a pregnancy progresses. Mothers-to-be and spouses/support persons are encouraged to attend these free sessions together. Session 1 is an intro to SCHD programs, comfort measures, nutrition, alcohol/drug/tobacco use, intro to the doula program and community resources. Caregiver Support Group2 - 3:30 p.m.
FHN Memorial Hospital Deaconess Room (lower level), 1045 W. Stephenson Street, Freeport
Free group for those who provide care to a family member, friend, or member of the community. Open-forum discussion and a chance to ask questions and share resources. RSVP is requested but not required - contact Sean Huguenin at 815-599-6160 for more information or to RSVP.

July is … Cord Blood Awareness Month Group B Strep Awareness Month Healthy Vision Month Juvenile Arthritis Awareness Month National Cleft & Craniofacial Awareness & Prevention Month Sarcoma Awareness Month UV Safety Month North American Indigenous people celebrate the July – August Sun Dance Ritual in June. For many tribes of the Plains Indians, the Sun Dance was a major communal religious ceremony. Generally held in early summer, the four-day dance ceremony involves sacrifice and supplication to ensure harmony between all living beings. Some Indigenous Oklahoma tribes perform the July-August Green Corn Ceremony this month as a time of renewal. The ceremony involves participation in sweatlodge ceremonies, dances, offerings, and feasting. Today (July 20) is the First Muharram, the Islamic New Year. It is the first day of the first month (Muharram) of the Islamic year. The people of Puerto Rico celebrate Munoz-Rivera Day on July 20. The day is the birthday of Luis Munoz-Rivera, a Puerto Rican patriot, poet, and journalist. Mormons celebrate Pioneer Day on July 24. The day honors the U.S. pioneers led by Brigham Young, who first settled Utah in 1847. The day is celebrated with parades to remember their pioneering ancestors. July 24 is Simon Bolivar Day for the people of Venezuela and Ecuador. Simon Bolivar (1783-1830) was one of South America’s greatest generals. His victories over the Spaniards won independence for Bolivia, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. He is called El Liberator and the “George Washington of South America.” |
