Evan Spangler (Nuclear Medicine) nominated by Janine Tessendorf. Evan was nominated for being patient centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Janine writes that during nuclear stress testing there is a CT scan portion of the test and oftentimes, patients are surprised by the nature of the CT portion and are nervous if they are claustrophobic. Because of this, many do not want to complete the scan. Explaining the scan can often make the patients more uncomfortable and cause a delay in the scanning process. Evan wanted patients to have the opportunity to be aware of what to expect before he escorted them to the imaging area so there are never any surprises. He took photos of the scanner and printed them to provide the nurses with photos to share with the patients who express concern with being claustrophobic. The pictures allow the patient to visualize the situation and they can decide if they can complete the scan without having to walk to the CT area. Janine writes, “Evan’s idea shows his concern for the patient and the patient’s feelings. Evan is helpful in such ways, wanting his patients to have the best experience with the least amount of surprises and in a most efficient manner.”

Melissa Larson & Robin Ortman (OB Department) nominated by Danielle Wittig. Melissa and Robin were both nominated for being patient centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. A patient tragically lost her husband during her pregnancy. Melissa was able to find out the patient’s wishes prior to presenting to deliver her baby and shared them with the OB Team so everyone was able to treat her as she requested to make her as comfortable as possible. Melissa and Robin were both working the day of the patient’s delivery. After the delivery, the OB Team usually gathers thumb prints of the baby’s mother and father and adds them to a keepsake with the baby’s footprints. Melissa and Robin, with the help of a family member, were able to obtain the father’s thumbprint from a necklace the family member had. Danielle writes, “This meant a lot to the patient and without these women thinking outside the box, this would not have been possible for the patient to have this irreplaceable memory.”

Others nominated this month include: Pamela Johnson, Michael Lower, Julene Siegmeier, Haley Auer, Ashley Seal, Tammy Kubatzke, Abby Sadler, Isabella Mercier, Lucy Roloff, Melissa Steien, Kristen Simpsion, Barbara Lloyd, Laurie Williams, and Albert Sledge

North American Indigenous people celebrate the July – August Sun Dance Ritual in June. For many tribes of the Plains Indians, the Sun Dance was a major communal religious ceremony. Generally held in early summer, the four-day dance ceremony involves sacrifice and supplication to ensure harmony between all living beings.

Some Indigenous Oklahoma tribes perform the July-August Green Corn Ceremony this month as a time of renewal. The ceremony involves participation in sweatlodge ceremonies, dances, offerings, and feasting.

Northern Cree, Ojibwa, and Algonkians tribes celebrate the last full moon of August with the August Native Wild Rice Harvest.

The August Hopi Snake Dance requires two weeks of ritual preparation. Snakes are gathered and watched over by children. The dancers take an emetic and dance with the snakes in their mouths, with an Antelope priest in attendance. After the dance, the snakes are released to carry their prayers.

Japan, the United States, and Canada observe Hiroshima Day on August 6. This solemn day commemorates the day that the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945. People from different backgrounds unite on this day to declare their commitment to never letting another nuclear bomb be used against humans again.

August 8 – 17 is Fravardeghan for people of the Zoroastrian faith. It lasts for 10 days in preparation for Now Ruz for those who follow the Shenshai calendar. Ancestors are memorialized during this time.
