“Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection,” said FHN Stroke and Sepsis Program Coordinator Tracy Love, MSN, RN, CNL. “It’s a chain reaction across the body that, without timely treatment, can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and
unfortunately, even death.”
Love and FHN Clinical Quality Analyst Kristina Stadermann, BSN, RN will talk about the infections that can lead to sepsis, how to recognize its symptoms and available treatment options at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20 at the FHN Family Healthcare Center – Burchard Hills, 1010 W. Fairway Drive in Freeport.
This program is free to attend, but registration is requested. For more information or to register online, visit www.fhn.org/speakerseries or call 1-877-600-0346, ext. 901. |

Northern Cree, Ojibwa, and Algonkians tribes
celebrate the last full moon of August with the August Native Wild
Rice Harvest.
The August Hopi Snake Dance requires two
weeks of ritual preparation. Snakes are gathered and watched over by
children. The dancers take an emetic and dance with the snakes in their
mouths, with an Antelope priest in attendance. After the dance, the
snakes are released to carry their prayers.
September is National Hispanic Heritage Month
in the United States. Initiated in 1968 as “National Hispanic Heritage
Week,” it was established in 1988 by the U.S. Congress and includes the
days between September 15 and October 15. Hispanic Heritage Month begins
September 15 because this day marks the anniversary of independence for
five Hispanic countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala,
and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico achieved independence on September
16, and Chile on September 18. Latinos from all across the nation take a
moment to reflect on their history, customs, and culture, as well as the
contributions their people have made to the United States.
Indigenous persons of the Apache tribe celebrate
the September Sunrise Dance this month. It is an ancient rite of
passage for 14-year-old girls and lasts four days. After a girl’s first
menstruation, the girl is massaged and prayed for by an older female
relative. Then, the girl’s family decides which ceremony will be
sponsored, which medicine man to choose, and whom to ask to be her
godparents and co-sponsors of the ceremony.
September 3 is the Red Earth Native American
Fair. It is a cultural festival that takes place over three days in
Oklahoma City. More than 150 Native tribes from the United States and
Canada gather in downtown Oklahoma City to share and participate in
their rich and diverse heritage through highest-quality original art,
drum, and dance juried competitions.
The United States and Canada celebrate Labor Day
on September 4. On June 29, 1894, the U.S. Congress voted Labor Day as a
national holiday to honor working people’s contribution of labor. The
day is celebrated both in the U.S. and Canada with parades and speeches.
