Congratulations to the July 2023 FHN PRIDE Champions!

Addison Long (Med-Surg) nominated by Tina Lingle. Addison was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Addison was nominated for her hard work during a very busy shift on med-surg. Tina writes that Addison was assigned to one side of the hallway and the patient acuity was very high on that side, with several patients at high risk for falls. Addison hit the ground running and never sat her entire shift while maintaining her charting and ensuring her patients were safe and had all of their needs met. She had a patient who was frustrated and having a difficult time and Addison cared for that patient with grace, keeping a friendly and positive attitude throughout her whole shift.

Tina writes, “I cannot tell her how much she is appreciated. She is a prime example of an excellent CNA and role model.”

Shiann Rowe (Emergency Department) nominated by Jill Toelke. Shiann was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Jill cared for a patient who had cancer and Shiann was her previous nurse. When Jill was caring for the patient, she could not stop talking about the “sweet girl who made her feel so loved” (Shiann). Shiann made sure the patient had everything she needed prior to her transfer to another hospital, including a meal from Culvers. The patient also told Jill about a care package she received from an anonymous person. While talking about the care package, Jill realized Shiann had sent her the package.

Jill writes, “Shiann did not want to be in the spotlight or be recognized for such a good deed, but this patient had a poor prognosis and wanted to make sure Shiann knew how much this meant to her and made her last days memorable.”

Kristen Worm (Echo/Vascular) nominated by Kimberly Zink. Kristen was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Kimberly writes that recently the general ultrasound team has taken over doing carotid duplex studies after staffing changes in the Echo/Vascular Department. Kristen and only one other tech are currently working in that department. A patient recently came in for a stress test and had a carotid ultrasound ordered. The patient finished early with the stress test, but general ultrasound was unable to fit the patient in early for the carotid duplex. He would have had to wait more than 3 hours for his test; however, Kristen had time available on her schedule and was available to perform the test and the patient only had to wait 10 minutes to have the test completed.

Kimberly writes, “Kristen is a great member of our team and this is only one small example of the things she does every day.”

Others nominated this month include Sara Thompson, Shelby Logemann, Penny Heckman, Makenzie Olsen, Matthew Gors, Kristen Simpson, Tina Kluck, Kendra Lindsey, Tabitha Graves, Amber Strong, James Merboth, Jacob Grabarek, Terri Hoertz, Noelle Maher, Michael Spangler, Beth Stegall, Miranda McGregor, and Alyssa Peterson

September is National Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. Initiated in 1968 as “National Hispanic Heritage Week,” it was established in 1988 by the U.S. Congress and includes the days between September 15 and October 15. Hispanic Heritage Month begins September 15 because this day marks the anniversary of independence for five Hispanic countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico achieved independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. Latinos from all across the nation take a moment to reflect on their history, customs, and culture, as well as the contributions their people have made to the United States.

Indigenous persons of the Apache tribe celebrate the September Sunrise Dance this month. It is an ancient rite of passage for 14-year-old girls and lasts four days. After a girl’s first menstruation, the girl is massaged and prayed for by an older female relative. Then, the girl’s family decides which ceremony will be sponsored, which medicine man to choose, and whom to ask to be her godparents and co-sponsors of the ceremony.

People of the Hindu faith celebrate Janmashtami on September 7. The day commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna and his rescue from potential death by the demon Kasna. Lord Krishna was born in a prison, then carried by his father to another village where he was secretly exchanged with a cow herder’s daughter for his safety.

The United States honors those affected by the World Trade Center attacks with a Day of Remembrance on September 11. The effects of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001 impacted Americans and most other nations and has brought us to focus on the devastation terrorism has caused in the world.

September 11 is Meskerem (New Year) in Ethiopia. During the time of the Pharaohs 4,000 years ago, the appearance of Soothis (Dog Star) marked the signal that the Nile River would rise, flooding the fertile plains so that planting could begin. The end of the rainy season became known as the New Year.

People of the Zoroastrian faith celebrate the creation of Earth with Gahambar Paitishahem September 12 – 16.
