Support FHN’s Ha Ha Holiday Gala! |
|
The 2023 FHN Ha Ha Holiday Gala is less than a month away, and our elves are hard at work getting ready for a great night. This year’s Gala will benefit the outgoing campaign to upgrade hospital rooms with new furniture, providing a more comfortable environment in which to heal and recover.
If you, your family or your team would like to support our fundraising efforts, you can choose an item (or items) for this year’s silent auction packages from our Amazon Wish List. It’s simple, easy, and all item donors will be recognized by name in the individual package descriptions.
If you’d like more information about donating to the silent auction, contact Kaitlyn at 815-232-2121 or [email protected].

Winter Nurse Internship Available |
|
The Winter Nurse Internship will be returning later this year. This program is for nursing students in their final year of an associate or baccalaureate program.
This program is designed to provide students the opportunity to develop and expand clinical knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and task performance through exposure to various patient-care experiences. Interns will work with an experienced nurse mentor and assume shared responsibility for a patient assignment.
If you know someone who may be interested in this program or would like additional information, please visit the careers section of the
FHN website and look for “Nurse Internship”. Please contact Carol Boeke, Talent Acquisition Specialist at
ext. 6706 with any questions. |
Tickets Available for FHN Festival of Trees Ha Ha Holiday Gala |
|
FHN’s popular Festival of Trees Gala event is back this year in an all-new format, and tickets are available now.
The Gala will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 at The Wagner House, 1 E. Spring Street in Freeport.
The evening will include a humorous magic show from Dewayne Hill, who has been featured on “America’s Got Talent” and Comedy
Central. Guests will enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres, comedy-themed cocktails and luscious desserts, and Hill will mingle with – and entertain – Gala guests during the evening, as well.
A wide array of silent auction packages will be available to bid on and take home that evening for holiday gifting.
Proceeds from this year’s Gala will benefit the FHN Foundation’s ongoing campaign to upgrade patient rooms at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport. Funds will help to purchase new recliners, over-the-bed tables, and end tables to provide a more comfortable environment in which to heal and recover.
No tickets will be sold at the door the night of the event – tickets are $75 and can be purchased online at fhn.org/gala2023 or by contacting the FHN Foundation office at FHN Memorial Hospital or by calling 815-599-6900 by Friday, Nov. 10.

The United States observes Disability Employment Awareness Month in October. In 1945, in an effort to assist disabled veterans, Congress designated the first week of October as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. In the 1970s, a historic shift of disability public policy occurred. For the first time, the exclusion of people with disabilities was viewed as discrimination. The efforts of disability activists led to significant changes in laws, such as the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act in 1990 and the designation of a full month to recognize the potential of America’s millions of working-age people with disabilities.
October is Women’s History Month in Canada. Established in 1992 by the government, this special month provides an opportunity to learn more about women’s historic accomplishments and their contributions to Canadian society.
Britain observes Black History Month in October. In Britain, Black History Month was first celebrated in October 1987 as part of African Jubilee Year. The decision to make this an annual event was endorsed by the Association of London Authorities. It has since grown to recognize and embrace the contributions and traditions of other black communities.
In Canada, October also is Latin American Heritage Month. Proclaimed by the Parliament of Canada on June 21, 2018, this month is an opportunity for Canadians to recognize the valuable contributions of members of the Latin American community to the country’s social, economic, political, and cultural fabric.
The people of Egypt celebrate the Abu Simbel Festival on October 22. Built by Ramses II, his temple is angled so that the inner sanctum lights up twice a year – on the anniversary of his rise to the throne and, once again, on his birthday. Crowds pack the temple before sunrise to watch the shafts of light illuminate the statues of Ramses, Ra, and Amon. The other date for this event is February 22.
On October 22, people of the Hindu faith celebrate Durga Puja, celebrating the divine creative force of the universe. The day honors the 10-armed goddess Durga, wife of Shiva, and the destroyer of demons.
Chulalongkorn Day, celebrated October 23 in Thailand, commemorates the birth of Rama V, a progressive ruler who lived in 1868 – 1910.
Families in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan visit the graves of their ancestors to celebrate the Chung Yeung Festival October 23.
Hindus celebrate Dussehra on October 24. Dussehra means “the tenth” and celebrates the triumph of Lord Ram over the demon Ravan, who stole his wife, Sita. The great Hindu epic poem, the Ramayana, is read and enacted, called Ram Lila. A big effigy of Ravan is burned, accompanied by fireworks. In Nepal, the celebration is called Dashain and is a major holiday.
