Nine Schools Score FHN Miles and Minutes Cash |
|
Nine area schools received checks from FHN this fall, thanks to their dedicated fans who counted their exercise minutes through the summer with FHN's Miles and Minutes program.
Together, exercisers logged enough activity (for the contest, miles were normalized to help ensure a more level playing field for schools of all sizes) to equate to 127,146.81 miles - that's the equivalent of more than 5 times around the Equator!
FHN's Miles and Minutes encouraged participants to be active and log various types of physical activity to win prize money for the school of their choice.
Miles and Minutes winners were chosen in two main categories - miles per school system (normalized based on the number of students in each school system to help ensure that all schools had an equal chance to win, no matter their size or how many participants they enlist) and average miles per participant. The winners are:
Miles per School System:
Tri-County Christian, with 98,651 miles ($2,000)
Immanuel Lutheran, with 34,124.3 miles ($1,000)
Aquin, with 19,585.12 miles ($500)
Average Miles per Participant:
West Carroll, with 256.3 miles per participant ($2,000)
Pearl City, with 120.38 miles per participant ($1,000)
Eastland, with 103.65 miles per participant ($500)
Schools that did not win a prize in the two main categories were eligible for Sweepstakes prizes. This year's winners are:
Orangeville - $500
Dakota - $400
Forreston - $300
The free program had 250 participants who logged all types of exercise from May 29 through August 27.

Support FHN’s Ha Ha Holiday Gala! |
|
The 2023 FHN Ha Ha Holiday Gala is less than a month away, and our elves are hard at work getting ready for a great night. This year’s Gala will benefit the ongoing campaign to upgrade hospital rooms with new furniture, providing a more comfortable environment in which to heal and recover.
If you, your family or your team would like to support our fundraising efforts, you can choose an item (or items) for this year’s silent auction packages from our Amazon Wish List. It’s simple, easy, and all item donors will be recognized by name in the individual package descriptions.
If you’d like more information about donating to the silent auction, contact Kaitlyn at 815-232-2121 or [email protected].

Winter Nurse Internship Available |
|
The Winter Nurse Internship will be returning later this year. This program is for nursing students in their final year of an associate or baccalaureate program.
This program is designed to provide students the opportunity to develop and expand clinical knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and task performance through exposure to various patient-care experiences. Interns will work with an experienced nurse mentor and assume shared responsibility for a patient assignment.
If you know someone who may be interested in this program or would like additional information, please visit the careers section of the
FHN website and look for “Nurse Internship”. Please contact Carol Boeke, Talent Acquisition Specialist at
ext. 6706 with any questions. |
Tickets Available for FHN Festival of Trees Ha Ha Holiday Gala |
|
FHN’s popular Festival of Trees Gala event is back this year in an all-new format, and tickets are available now.
The Gala will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 17 at The Wagner House, 1 E. Spring Street in Freeport.
The evening will include a humorous magic show from Dewayne Hill, who has been featured on “America’s Got Talent” and Comedy
Central. Guests will enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres, comedy-themed cocktails and luscious desserts, and Hill will mingle with – and entertain – Gala guests during the evening, as well.
A wide array of silent auction packages will be available to bid on and take home that evening for holiday gifting.
Proceeds from this year’s Gala will benefit the FHN Foundation’s ongoing campaign to upgrade patient rooms at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport. Funds will help to purchase new recliners, over-the-bed tables, and end tables to provide a more comfortable environment in which to heal and recover.
No tickets will be sold at the door the night of the event – tickets are $75 and can be purchased online at fhn.org/gala2023 or by contacting the FHN Foundation office at FHN Memorial Hospital or by calling 815-599-6900 by Friday, Nov. 10.

The United States observes Disability Employment Awareness Month in October. In 1945, in an effort to assist disabled veterans, Congress designated the first week of October as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. In the 1970s, a historic shift of disability public policy occurred. For the first time, the exclusion of people with disabilities was viewed as discrimination. The efforts of disability activists led to significant changes in laws, such as the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act in 1990 and the designation of a full month to recognize the potential of America’s millions of working-age people with disabilities.
October is Women’s History Month in Canada. Established in 1992 by the government, this special month provides an opportunity to learn more about women’s historic accomplishments and their contributions to Canadian society.
Britain observes Black History Month in October. In Britain, Black History Month was first celebrated in October 1987 as part of African Jubilee Year. The decision to make this an annual event was endorsed by the Association of London Authorities. It has since grown to recognize and embrace the contributions and traditions of other black communities.
In Canada, October also is Latin American Heritage Month. Proclaimed by the Parliament of Canada on June 21, 2018, this month is an opportunity for Canadians to recognize the valuable contributions of members of the Latin American community to the country’s social, economic, political, and cultural fabric.
The United States celebrates National Indigenous
Month in November. Since 1900, many have sought to recognize the
great influence American Natives have had on the history, cultural
development, and continuing growth of the country. Various dates and
weeks were acknowledged until 1976, when Congress authorized a week in
October as Native American Awareness Week. Finally, in 1990, the month
of November was chosen because it is traditionally a time when many
American Natives gather for fall harvest festivals, world-renewal
ceremonies, and pow-wows.
The October-November Iroquois Harvest Ceremony
is celebrated in November. It is a day-long ceremony to give thanks to
earth spirits for providing now and in the future.
Wiccans celebrate Samhain on October 31.
Traditionally, animals were slaughtered for winter provisions and the
spirits of those who have died in the past year are invited to a final
celebration.
Halloween is celebrated October 31 in the
United States and Canada. This tradition goes back to the Celtic people
2,000 years ago who celebrated their New Year in late autumn and honored
Samhain, “Lord of the Dead.”
Christians observe All Saints’ Day on
November 1. The day is for honoring saints, known and unknown.
People of the Hindu faith celebrate Karva Chauth
on November 1. It is a one-day fast kept by married Hindu women for the
well-being and longevity of their husbands. The husbands feed the first
bite to their wives only after they see the moon.
