The United States celebrates National Indigenous Month in November. Since 1900, many have sought to recognize the great influence American Natives have had on the history, cultural development, and continuing growth of the country. Various dates and weeks were acknowledged until 1976, when Congress authorized a week in October as Native American Awareness Week. Finally, in 1990, the month of November was chosen because it is traditionally a time when many American Natives gather for fall harvest festivals, world-renewal ceremonies, and pow-wows.

The October-November Iroquois Harvest Ceremony is celebrated in November. It is a day-long ceremony to give thanks to earth spirits for providing now and in the future.

Today (November 23) is Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Early American settlers gave thanks for good harvests by decorating their churches with fruits and vegetables and celebrating dinner with venison and waterfowl.

In Japan, November 23 is Kinro Kansha No Hi, the Japanese Labor Thanksgiving Day, when people express gratitude to each other for their labors throughout the year.

People of the Sikh faith observe the Martyrdom of Guru Teg Bahadur on November 24. He (1621 – 1675) was the ninth of the Ten Sikh Gurus and executed in Delhi by the Mughal emperor. He died for the Sikh faith and also for religious liberty.

November 25 is St. Catherine’s Day for the people of Canada and France. She is the patron saint of virgins and philosophers, lived in Alexandria in the 4th century AD, and was martyred after being tortured on a spiked wheel. At one time, match-making balls were held on this day.

People of the Baha’i’ faith celebrate the Day of Covenant on November 26. The eldest son and appointed successor of Baha’u’llah, Abdu’l-Baha, referred to this day as the Center of the Covenant, which was established to safeguard the unity of the community.

November 27 is Guru Nanak’s Birthday, celebrated by people of the Sikh faith. Born in 1469 BC, he was the first of the Ten Gurus of the Sikh faith and founded Sikhism. An accomplished poet, 974 of his hymns are in the Sikh scriptures, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

For people of the Jain faith, November 27 is Lokashah Jayanti, which commemorates the birth of a famous 15th century reformer, Lonka Saha, who opposed temple worship and use of images.

November 28 is the Ascension of Abdu’l-Baha for people of the Baha’i’ faith. After years of serving his father and safeguarding the unity of the Faith, he passed away in Haifa, Israel in 1921.
