Congratulations to January 2024’s FHN PRIDE Champions!

Shevawn Svehla (Social Services) nominated by Keely Zunker and Lindsay Bader. Shevawn was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Keely nominated Shevawn for helping patients ensure they have a smooth transition upon discharge. She has worked with facilities in Wisconsin and the Chicago area to discharge patients so patients are able to be closer to their families. Shevawn is creative and innovative in many situations to help patients get equipment and services they will need for discharge who would otherwise not be likely to benefit from these services. Keely writes that Shevawn treats every patient with the same respect, dignity, and compassion she would treat one of her own family members. Lindsay said the Inpatient Rehab Team recognizes Shevawn for being punctual, dependable, and extremely proactive. She builds trusting relationships with her peers, patients, and patient families. She writes, “Daily, she goes above and beyond to make sure that each and every one of the patients has the safest discharge plan; in many instances she has to explore many avenues to make such possible.”

Mike Lower (Messenger Services) nominated by Megan Loomis. Mike was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. A patient was being discharged from the hospital to a nursing home via ambulance. He was from a local shelter and had a lot of belongings with him, including a wheelchair and a walker. The ambulance transporting him was not able to fit all of his belongings in the vehicle. "One of our nurses reached out to the Director of Messenger Services to see if the patient’s belongings could be taken to the nursing home. Mike Lower was gracious enough to rearrange his afternoon schedule to accommodate our request and get the patient his belongings in a timely manner," Megan said.

Beth Smith (Speech Therapy) nominated by Wendy Wells. Beth was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion, being innovative, delivering excellence, and being engaged. Wendy writes that a patient arrived for her exam, and upon taking a history, Beth noticed that the order the patient needed for the visit was not there. After speaking with the primary care physician, the order was received for the correct exam. For this particular exam, Speech Therapy needed to perform the exam in conjunction with radiology. Beth was called and asked if she could accommodate this outpatient, and although she was the only speech therapist working that day, she rearranged her schedule to accommodate the request. Wendy writes, “Beth realized the importance of the patient having her testing performed the same day so she would not have to reschedule the exam and return at a later date.”

Others nominated this month include Diane Kunz, Heather Penticoff, Sherry Haijenga, Tamen Squire, Glenna Halley Hill, Ayse Tanik, Melissa Steien, Meghan Pizzolato, Terri Holland, Mustafa Ghazal, Rikki Perrin, Becki Thomas, Martini McClellan, Trinity Pearson, Shaniqua Jackson, Nicole Crowell, Nicole Kass, Brittney Mordini, Whitnee Jackson, Nino Munjishvili, Cassie Mendez, Kendra Lindsey, Crystal Preston, Gary Ebbings, Kiley Haefner, Kaydra Heller, and Albert Sledge

February is Black History Month in the United States. Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of Black history, is greatly owed to Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who first launched “Negro History Week” in 1926. Woodson chose February because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly impacted the American Black population, Abraham Lincoln (president of the U.S., who freed slaves during the Civil War), and Frederick Douglass (who worked to end slavery). The purpose of the month is to recognize the contributions of Black Americans and develop a better understanding of the Black experience.

Canada also celebrates Black History Month in February. In December of 1995, the Parliament of Canada recognized February as Black History Month following a motion introduced by the first African-Canadian woman elected to Parliament, Jean Augustine. The presence of peoples of African descent in Canada dates back farther than Samuel de Champlain’s first voyage down the St. Lawrence River.

Indigenous peoples celebrate the January–February Hopi Holy Cycle in February. Buffalo dances are performed in Hopi reserves.

March is Women’s History Month in the United States and the United Kingdom. It began as a single week and a local event. In 1978 Sonoma County, California sponsored a women’s history week to promote the teaching of women’s history. The week of March 8 was selected to include International Women’s Day. The day is rooted in such ideas and events as a woman’s right to vote and a woman’s right to work, women’s strikes for bread, women’s strikes for peace at the end of World War I, and the U.N. Charter declaration of gender equity at the end of World War II. This day is an occasion to review haw far women have come in their struggle for equality, peace, and development. In 1981, Congress passed a resolution making the week a national celebration, and in 1987 expanded it to the full month of March.

The people of Bulgaria celebrate spring with Baba Marta on March 1. Red and white yarn designs, martenitza, are shared to symbolize health. Bulgarians wear the yarn designs on their clothing until they see a stork or a blossoming tree. They then either put the martenitza on a tree branch to bring on spring or hide it under a rock to represent the wish that the evil spirits in nature will go to sleep.

March 2 – 19 is Ala for people of the Baha’i’ faith. It is the 19th and final month in the Baha’i’ calendar and the time of the 19-day fast in preparation of their new year, Now Ruz. The English translation of Ala (Arabic) is Loftiness.
