FHN Celebrating Providers Throughout March |
|
FHN is proud to celebrate our healthcare providers throughout March, the month of Doctors’ Day.
March 30 is National Doctors’ Day, a chance to acknowledge all that physicians do for their communities. On March 30, 1842, in Jefferson, Georgia, Dr. Crawford Long used ether to anesthetize a patient, James Venable, and painlessly excised a tumor from his neck.
All month, FHN is offering the chance to send a message to your healthcare provider – just visit www.fhn.org/doctorsday. Messages will be shared with providers and may be featured online (with personal information removed).

This program will provide students with a 10-week internship to develop and expand their clinical knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and task performance through exposure to various patient-care experiences in the hospital setting. March is Women’s History Month in the United
States and the United Kingdom. It began as a single week and a local
event. In 1978 Sonoma County, California sponsored a women’s history
week to promote the teaching of women’s history. The week of March 8 was
selected to include International Women’s Day. The day is rooted in such
ideas and events as a woman’s right to vote and a woman’s right to work,
women’s strikes for bread, women’s strikes for peace at the end of World
War I, and the U.N. Charter declaration of gender equity at the end of
World War II. This day is an occasion to review haw far women have come
in their struggle for equality, peace, and development. In 1981,
Congress passed a resolution making the week a national celebration, and
in 1987 expanded it to the full month of March.
Christians celebrate Palm Sunday on March
24. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and was cheered by crowds who
strew palm branches in his path. It is observed with worship services
and parades using palm branches.
People of the Jewish faith celebrate Purim
on March 24. Also known as the Feast of Lots,
the holiday celebrates the deliverance of Jews in Persia from the
machination of Haman. People dress in costume and give gifts of food to
each other.
March 25 is Holi for people of the Sikh and
Hindu faiths. According to myth, a tyrannical king’s son, Pralad,
refused to worship his father as God and was condemned to death by
burning. However, the boy’s aunt, named Holika, transferred her own
immunity from fire to Pralad, and burned to death in his place. This
festival of color celebrates Spring, and people play with liquid and
powdered colors, light bonfires and blow horns to celebrate the
destruction of Holika.
Christians observe Annunciation on March 25.
It commemorates the day Jesus’ mother, Mary, was visited by an angel to
inform her that she was blessed and chosen to be the mother of Christ.
Sikhs celebrate Hola Mohalia on March 26.
Mock battles are fought and martial arts are displayed in honor of Guru
Gobind Singh, who took to armed struggle against tyranny.
March 26 is the Zoroastrian celebration for the
Birth of Prophet Zarathustra. Zarathustra (Zoroaster in Greek;
Zarthosht in India and Persia) is the founder of the Zoroastrian
religion dating back to sometime between 1500 and 1000 BC. He lived in
Persia, modern-day Iran. Zoroastrianism became the state religion of
various Persian empires until the 7th century AD. When Arabs,
followers of Islam, invaded Persia in 650 AD, a small number of
Zoroastrians fled to India, where most are concentrated today.
