Congratulations to March 2024’s FHN PRIDE Champions!

Pamela Johnson in the Respiratory department was nominated by Tamen Squire.

Pamela was nominated for being patient-centered by noticing a patient had an outpatient test with her in the afternoon who was already in the hospital for testing earlier that morning. Pam was able to rearrange her schedule within a couple of minutes to work him in so he wouldn’t have to either have a long wait here or leave and come back several hours later. The patient was very appreciative of being able to get all of his testing done early and have the rest of his day free!

Thank you, Pam for going beyond expectations and keeping patients first.

Margie Kochsmier, Infection Preventionist, was nominated by Lisa Glass.

Margie was nominated for showing compassion, delivering excellence, and being engaged by helping out on 3 North during a very busy shift. Lisa states, Margie came to our unit to check isolation doors on the patients, while she was on 3N she observed that staff was all very busy. There was no secretary and no team lead at the desk, Margie was a HUGE help to us and we are so thankful she was able to notice we were in need of an extra pair of hands! Margie has also been known to do this for us in the past. We are VERY thankful for her help in such a time of need!!

Thank you, Margie for your compassion shown to your team.

Joann Olszewski from 3 East was nominated by Mary Friedag.

Joann was nominated for being patient-centered, showing respect, dignity, and compassion. Mary states that Joann is the picture of what a TEAM PLAYER looks like and leads by example, greeting everyone with a smile and warm hello. She brings donuts to the Med/Surg team members when she works Sundays and if she works two days in a row and the first day was a challenge, she brings her famous homemade chocolate chip cookies to share with the team. Joann also has been known to buy reading glasses, hair ties, and hair brushes for patients on the Med/Surg floors so patients have these much-needed supplies after admission to the hospital from the Emergency Department. Joann pays for these items herself and does not ask for reimbursement, she states that it is just the right thing to do.

Thank you, Joann for going the extra mile for patients.

Others nominated this month include Tana Hellwig, Maycee Bamberg, Lisa Farrar, Karen Desalvo, Mykia Bruce, Lori Goeke, Rachel Walker x2, Kelley Hartman, Lisa Glass, Kristen Simpson, Megan Christensen, Jessica Carson x2, Capri Little, Jessica Musser, Ryle Stuckey, Tori Clark x2, Beth McLain, Kalli Wilson, Betsy Onley, and Tonya Newill.

Continue Delivering Excellence: Every Patient, Every Time! Take PRIDE in what you do at FHN!

Please keep your eyes open for others demonstrating our PRIDE standards and nominate them for PRIDE Champion or our Golden Globe recognition program for leaders! Be sure to include details in your nomination to ensure their excellence is portrayed as you have witnessed it. Thank you!

FHN Celebrating National Prevention Week May 7 – 13

The Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is celebrating National Prevention Week (NPW) May 7 – 13, 2024. NPW was started by SAMHSA to celebrate and showcase the programs and initiatives that communities and organizations have implemented to raise awareness about substance use prevention and positive mental health.

Through the support of the Substance Use Prevention Services grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services, FHN partnered with the schools in Jo Daviess and Stephenson counties in 2018 to implement a multi-session youth prevention education program and an alcohol prevention communication campaign in the middle / junior high schools and a vaping prevention communication campaign at the senior high schools. Generation Rx, an opioid education program that addresses the opioid crisis and dangers of fentanyl and counterfeit drugs, is currently being offered to area schools and agencies serving youth in the 7th through 12th grade.

The outcomes of these programs are measured by the biennial Illinois Youth Survey (IYS). The overall results from the 2022 IYS survey for Jo Daviess County showed a 20 percent decrease in reported past 30-day use of alcohol in the 10th and 12th grades and a 10 percent decrease in vaping and marijuana use by the 10th and 12th grades compared to the 2018 survey. The results for Stephenson County for the same time period also showed a decrease in alcohol use in the 10th and 12th grade by 11 percent, vaping decreased an average of 8.5 percent, and marijuana use by 4.5 percent. All of the JDC schools and 7 of the Stephenson County schools are registered to take the 2024 survey, the results of which will be available in late summer.

The FHN Prevention Team would like recognize the following schools and organizations for their ongoing commitment and support for the substance misuse programs:
• East Dubuque Junior and Senior High Schools
• Galena Middle and Senior High Schools
• River Ridge Junior and Senior High Schools
• Scales Mound Junior and Senior High Schools
• Stockton Junior and Senior High Schools
• Warren Junior and Senior High Schools

Canada celebrates Asian Heritage Month in May. The Senate of Canada passed a motion in December 2001, designating May as Asian Heritage Month. Canadians take part in festivities commemorating the legacy of Asian Canadians and their many contributions which have helped Canada become the multicultural and diverse nation it is today.

In the United States, May is Asian Pacific Heritage Month. Generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have strengthened the U.S. as a nation. Many ethnic groups worked tirelessly to build a national railroad, paving the way for western expansion. The first Asian/Pacific Heritage Week was celebrated in 1979, in response to little recognition of this population during the 1976 bicentennial. By 1990, the celebration was a month long and then made official in 1992.

Both Canada and the United States celebrate Jewish Heritage Month in May. It provides an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the contributions that Jewish people have made to the country and in the communities across North America.

May is National Older Peoples Month in the United States. It was established by presidential proclamation in 1963. The entire nation is encouraged to pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. It is celebrated across the country through ceremonies and events.

Indigenous populations celebrate the May Hopi Kachina Dances in May. During late spring and early summer, long lines of Kachina Dancers, representing many spirit-powers, perform dances in Hopi pueblos.

The April – May Iroquois Strawberry Season is a time of thanksgiving and the Great Feather Dance.

May 12 is Mother’s Day in the United States and Canada. In 1914, the second Sunday in May was officially declared Mother’s Day by President Wilson. Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia first suggested a day on which to honor mothers and motherhood.

The people of Portugal celebrate Our Lady of Fatima on May 13. On May 13, 1917 in Portugal, three shepherd children saw and conversed with the Virgin Mary in a vision. This event occurred on the 13th day of the month for six months in a row.

May 13 is Yom HaZikaron (Memorial Day) in Israel. This is the country’s day to honor soldiers who died fighting for their country.

The people of Spain celebrate the San Isidro Labrador Festival May 15. Devotees celebrate the feast day of San Isidro Labrador, the revered patron saint of farmers, peasants, agricultural workers, and of Madrid, Spain.
