Congratulations to April 2024’s FHN PRIDE Champions! |

Heather Penticoff in the Laboratory at Burchard Hills was nominated by Deanne Hessenius. Heather was drawing blood on a patient and noted the patient had swelling to both lower extremities. She reported this to Deanne and it was determined the patient was started on a new medication which caused the swelling.
This lab was lost during the day and Heather stayed one hour after her shift to track down the labs so the patient did not have to be redrawn. Heather took it one step further and performed the computer order retrieval to get the result. Thank you, Heather, for being patient-focused, compassionate, and innovative in your collection of missing data.
Angel Grech, CNA, Hospice Care was nominated by Kristine Robinson. Kristine writes, “It is my pleasure to nominate one of FHN Hospice’s finest CNAs, Angel Grech, for a PRIDE award.” Angel provides compassionate and respectful care for the patients and their loved ones, and is often times described as kind, competent, and professional. Recently a patient’s wife contacted Kristine and asked for Angel to call her so she could personally thank her for the care she gave her husband.
This patient’s wife states Angel was the only caregiver he clicked with near the end of his life, Angel was able to convince the patient to participate in care that others were not able to get him to comply to. “Angel is patient centered and her relationships with those we serve is quickly built as she approaches each person with dignity, personalizing care to each individual’s preferences and wishes.” Angel is known to show special attention to patient safety and education in the home. She is even known to help families rearrange their home to make it safer for the patients to move around.
“Recently, Angel spent several hours at a patient’s house assisting to reposition the gentleman, bathing him, and comforting the family. Not only was Angel fully engaged with the patient providing exceptional care as she attended to his personal needs, but she washed the sink full of dishes to allow the wife to sit at the bedside with the patient.” Thank you, Angel, for providing exceptional care to each and every Hospice patient and their loved ones.
Cory Malake from Central Scheduling was nominated by Kathy Ellis. Cory adapted quickly to his role in central scheduling and answers every call with professionalism and respect. He works the late shift, and also volunteered to help out at the visitors desk as needed.
Cory has been a team leader since he came on board giving tips and tricks, advice and helps everyone in the office with tasks. He takes time to update phone numbers for the offices we serve and makes a monthly on call schedule to make it easier for the schedulers - all without being asked to do so. Cory goes beyond scheduling and will assist patients in making extra calls to help with billing problems and ensure the patient has a solution so they can receive the services needed. Cory will assist if there is a scheduling conflict, taking time to call the patient and reschedule the appointment and assist in coordinating busy schedules.
"Cory is a treasure to this department and we are blessed to have him. He is generous and a blessing to others.” Thank you, Cory, for your dedication and for delivering excellence with each interaction.
Others nominated this month include Mike Lower, Keri Call, Josie Allspaugh, Shelly Auwaerter, Kelly Koester (x2), Trish Czerwien, Kayla Davis, Megan Clair, Glenna Halley Hill, Kathy Lee, Martiny McClellan, Shevawn Svehla, Barb Ruter, Marci Morris, Lori Lawler, Melissa Steien, Tabatha Ellberg, Ray Dalafu, Jessica Adkins, Mary Jo Kerr, Alyssa Peterson, Michael Roberson, Meghan Fry, Crystal Winter, Connie Miller, Teresa Muggler, and Jill Toelke.
Continue Delivering Excellence: Every Patient, Every Time! Take PRIDE in what you do at FHN!
Please keep your eyes open for others demonstrating our PRIDE standards and nominate them for PRIDE Champion or our Golden Globe recognition program for leaders! Be sure to include details in your nomination to ensure their excellence is portrayed as you have witnessed it. Thank you! |
FHN Miles And Minutes is Back for 2024! |
|
FHN’s free popular summer exercise program, Miles and Minutes, is back for the summer of 2024!
One of the best ways to stay healthy is to keep moving, so FHN is inviting families across northwest Illinois to turn their warm-weather chores and fun into cash for their schools. Three prizes ($2,000, $1,000, and $500) will be awarded in three categories.
Summer exercise like golf, 5K runs, hikes and walks, and even everyday physical activity like mowing the lawn and gardening can count as exercise – as well as summer workouts for student-athletes age 12 and over.
The program began Monday, May 27 and runs through Sunday, August 25. Exercisers can join at any time during the summer. Activity is logged online-only and there is no charge to participate. Anyone 12 years and older can participate, including student athletes.
Registration and the competition rules, as well as information about how miles will be calculated to determine the winning school systems, is available at www.fhn.org/milesandminutes.
A calculator on the website will automatically convert minutes of almost any type of physical activity into miles. This will make it easy to follow the competition. Prize categories are:
•School system with the most average “miles” logged per participant
•School system with the most “miles” total
•Schools not eligible for above prizes will be entered into a “sweepstakes” drawing to win one of three cash prizes.
The program normalizes miles based on the number of students in each school system to help ensure that all schools have an equal chance to win, no matter their size or how many participants they enlist. Prize money will be awarded in the fall.
Participants from any zip code can support any school system, so family members in Lena, for example, can designate their miles to the River Ridge school system if they wish. Running totals will be displayed on the website and reported throughout the summer, and you can keep up with what’s happening on Miles and Minutes Facebook page.
Winners (to be drawn at random) in the Sweepstakes category will receive a prize of $500, $400, or $300. Read more about the Sweepstakes category at the Miles and Minutes site.

In the United States, May is Asian Pacific Heritage Month. Generations of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have strengthened the U.S. as a nation. Many ethnic groups worked tirelessly to build a national railroad, paving the way for western expansion. The first Asian/Pacific Heritage Week was celebrated in 1979, in response to little recognition of this population during the 1976 bicentennial. By 1990, the celebration was a month long and then made official in 1992.
Both Canada and the United States celebrate Jewish Heritage Month in May. It provides an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the contributions that Jewish people have made to the country and in the communities across North America.
May is National Older Peoples Month in the United States. It was established by presidential proclamation in 1963. The entire nation is encouraged to pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. It is celebrated across the country through ceremonies and events.

The most significant date in LGBT history occurring in June was the three-day protest in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, an event that marked the first time the gay community joined together to fight for its rights, thereby gaining national attention. The anniversary of this event was one of the reasons June was chosen as the nationally proclaimed month to celebrate LGBT Pride.
