Pride Winners Recognized |
|
Congratulations to Tamen Squire and Glenna Halley Hill, who won the overall 2023 PRIDE awards at the FHN Recognition Day held last month!
All 2023 winners of the PRIDE award were eligible to win $500 and a prize basket and were chosen at random from the 36 winners throughout
the year.
Glenna Halley Hill (Central Business Office): Glenna’s nominator Ashley writes of a time she received a call from a patient who was losing his
insurance coverage and wanted to know the cost associated with his appointments. She looked at his previous visits and gave him an estimate and discussed FHN’s Financial Assistance Program with him.
The patient called back a couple of days later and left a voicemail for Ashley with questions regarding FHN’s Financial Assistance Program. Before calling the patient back, Ashley called Glenna, FHN’s
Financial Assistance Coordinator, to get more information, as she was not familiar with the specifics of the program. Ashley writes that Glenna was very helpful and explained that the
patient should use The Marketplace to get the best deal possible on a new insurance plan. She also made Ashley aware of a tax credit that the patient could get to lower his monthly payments and offered
to assist the patient in the search of a Marketplace plan if he needed assistance. Ashley made the patient aware of all of the information Glenna shared with her, and was able to do so with confidence,
due to the information Glenna shared.
Tamen Squire (Echo/Vascular): Tamen’s nominator, Amy, would like to recognize Tamen for coming in on New Year’s Eve day to perform
an ultrasound. A patient presented to the Emergency Department Saturday evening, and it was suspected they had a DVT (blood clot). Although this study was not considered an emergent study, the upcoming
holiday and the fact that the patient recently had surgery posed a problem for treatment unless an ultrasound could be done before the Ultrasound Department would be available the following Monday. Tamen graciously agreed to accommodate this patient’s need and allowed for a more timely plan of care! Thank you, Tamen!

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, as declared by the Canadian Parliament in 2009. It is a tribute to the heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities across Canada. It’s an opportunity not only to recognize the historic contributions of indigenous peoples to the development of Canada, but also the strength of present-day indigenous communities and their promise for the future.
The United States as well as Canada and Australia observe Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month in June. Events are celebrated by communities across the nations on different dates from June through early August. The most significant date in LGBT history occurring in June was the three-day protest in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, an event that marked the first time the gay community joined together to fight for its rights, thereby gaining national attention. The anniversary of this event was one of the reasons June was chosen as the nationally proclaimed month to celebrate LGBT pride.
National Caribbean American Heritage Month celebrated across the United States in June, was proclaimed in 2011. It commemorates a time to celebrate the history and culture of Caribbean Americans.
June 12 – 13 is Shavuot for people of the Jewish faith. Called the Feast of Weeks or Pentecost, which means 50 and therefore is celebrated on the 50th day at the end of Passover. Shavuot celebrates the time when the Ten Commandments were given to Moses on Mount Sinai. The Feast lasts for 2 days.
Muslims celebrate the Day of Hajj (Day of Arafat) on June 16 with an annual pilgrimage to Mecca. The pilgrimage is one of the five Pillars of Islam. All Muslims are expected to perform the Hajj at least once in their lifetime if they have the physical and financial capacity. About 6 million Muslims from more than 70 countries journey to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. In one of the rites of the Hajj, pilgrims move in a circular, counterclockwise procession around the Ka’bah.
June 16 is Father’s Day in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. The origins of the day to honor fathers began in 1910, when Louise Dodd of Spokane, Wash., suggested to her minister that a day be set aside. Her own father was a Civil War veteran who raised his six children on the family farm after his wife died in childbirth. Interest in the day grew, and in 1966, a presidential proclamation established Father’s Day as the third Sunday in June.
Muslims celebrate Eid-ul-Adha beginning June 17. It concludes the Hajj and is a three-day festival celebrating Abraham’s test of obedience to Allah when he was asked to sacrifice his son Ismael. At the last minute, Allah replaced Ismael with a lamb.
June 19 is Juneteenth in the United States. June 19, 1865, also known as National Freedom Day, is considered the official end of slavery in the United States. Slaves in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas were not told about their freedom until this day, even though other Southern states had known since April 1863. Today, the holiday is observed in African-American communities throughout the country with rallies, concerts, and fairs.
