Congratulations to May 2024’s FHN PRIDE Champions!

Lesli Brown, Emergency Department

Lesli's nominator writes, “A young patient was brought by their parent to the ER to be seen for a mental health issue. In talking to the parent, Lesli discovered the parent and child might be losing their living situation and the child had no clothing to wear if they were transferred for further care. Lesli took it upon herself to purchase some basic clothing items for the child so they would have clothing to take with them.”

"Lesli showed great compassion and a patient-focused attitude. Your dedication to the community we serve is apparent!" - Jennifer Sliffy

Michelle Auwaeter, ICU

Michelle's nominator writes Med-Surg had a patient recently who was having a difficult day and led into the night shift. Both the nursing supervisor and the team lead had been in the patient’s room trying to accommodate the patient’s needs and wants and were unsuccessful. The team lead requested Shelli (Michelle) go into the room to see if she could help. Shelli took the time to sit and talk with the patient and really listen. “The patient was extremely appreciative of her. This freed up his primary nurse to see the rest of her patients.” Shelli went the extra mile by talking with the gentlemen’s family and calling the physician to express the concerns they had.

"Thank you, Shelli, for going above and beyond to help your fellow teammates and assisting the patient. The time and care you provided to this patient left an impact." - Kelly Stewart

Diane Kunz, Central Scheduling

Diane saw a patient’s family member who was lost in the hallway in search of the surgical waiting room. The family member informed Diane that she was looking forward to a cup of coffee. Diane informed her there is no longer coffee available in the waiting room, but they would give her a voucher for a free cup of coffee in the cafeteria. The family member decided it was too far for her to walk to get the coffee, so Diane offered to go to the cafeteria for her. After Diane showed the family member to the patient’s room, she went and got the coffee voucher, went to the cafeteria and not only bought her a coffee, but bought her lunch with her own money. “Diane went above and beyond to show kindness and provide a good experience for our patient’s family member.” It was later discovered after talking to Diane, the family member was once an FHN volunteer. Diane said, “She put in all this time to help us, so I wanted to do something nice for her.”

"Thank you, Diane, for taking a pause from your busy day and making this family member’s day brighter, as the patient stated, 'This made my whole day.'" - Hannah Hunziker

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, as declared by the Canadian Parliament in 2009. It is a tribute to the heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis communities across Canada. It’s an opportunity not only to recognize the historic contributions of indigenous peoples to the development of Canada, but also the strength of present-day indigenous communities and their promise for the future.

The United States as well as Canada and Australia observe Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month in June. Events are celebrated by communities across the nations on different dates from June through early August. The most significant date in LGBT history occurring in June was the three-day protest in 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City, an event that marked the first time the gay community joined together to fight for its rights, thereby gaining national attention. The anniversary of this event was one of the reasons June was chosen as the nationally proclaimed month to celebrate LGBT pride.

National Caribbean American Heritage Month celebrated across the United States in June, was proclaimed in 2011. It commemorates a time to celebrate the history and culture of Caribbean Americans.

The July – August Sun Dance Ritual takes place at this time. For many tribes of the Plains Indians, the Sun Dance was a major communal religious ceremony. Generally held in early summer, the four-day dance ceremony involves sacrifice and supplication to ensure harmony between all living beings.

This is also the time of the July – August Green Corn Ceremony, performed by some Oklahoma tribes as a time of renewal. The ceremony involves participation in sweat lodge ceremonies, dances, offerings, and fasting.

Today (June 27) is Multiculturalism Day in Canada. The government officially recognized June 27 as Canadian Multiculturalism Day on Nov. 13, 2002. The day acknowledges the contributions that various communities make to Canadian society and to celebrate the country’s richness and diversity.

June 28 is Stonewall Rebellion Day, commemorating the U.S. anniversary of the protest against police harassment in New York City’s Greenwich Village in 1969. The event has been commemorated with a Pride Parade each year in New York City on the last Sunday in June.

People of the Zoroastrian faith celebrate Gahambar Maidyoshem June 29 – July 1. The holiday celebrates the creation of animals, and is a time for the equitable sharing of food.

July 1 is Canada Day. On July 1, 1867, the British North America Act created the Canadian federal government. The BNA proclaimed “one Dominion under the name of Canada,” hence the original title of the holiday, Dominion Day. It was officially renamed by an act of Parliament on Oct. 27, 1982.

Australians celebrate NAIDOC on July 3, which stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. A week-long celebration around Australia during the first week in July, it focuses on the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
