FHN Hosting Blood Drive August 12

One in three people will need blood at some point in their lifetime. Please consider joining us for a Rock River Valley Blood Center (RRVBC) blood drive Monday, August 12 at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport.

Appointments are available to donate between noon and 5 p.m. in the Globe and Deaconess rooms on the lower level of FHN Memorial Hospital. (Donors should enter the hospital through the east atrium entrance and follow signage to the event.)

Visit https://donor.rrvbc.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/55710 to make an appointment or for more information about donating blood. Walk-ins also will be welcome.

Persons at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent) who weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health can donate blood. The process is relatively quick and painless and can save lives. If you are not sure if you are eligible to donate, call RRVBC at 815-965-8751.

The RRVBC is the only supplier of blood and related services to FHN Memorial Hospital as well as all 4 Rockford hospitals and the UW Carbone Cancer Center of Rockford.

Congratulations to June 2024's FHN PRIDE Champions!

Iris Fanning, Ambulatory Social Worker - While out in the community at the Salvation Army, Iris mentioned to Captain Lisa that a patient she sees at Hosmer Apartments was supposed to receive a delivery and the regular driver was unable to get to her to make the delivery. With further discussion, it was it noted two other individuals were waiting for their deliveries as well and Iris was able to take their deliveries to them, too!

Autumn Seidemann, 3 East - Autumn's nominator, Megan, writes of a Hospice patient on their unit who had a 3-year-old visitor come to see him in his final days. The child was shy and uncomfortable being in the hospital, so Autumn took it upon herself to brighten the child's day. Autumn went to the ED, where it is known they have toys for the young patients, so she brought back a toy for this little girl. "She gave it to the little girl and her face just lit-up!" Autumn had truly made her day, as each time the child passed the nurse's station, she would always interact and say "hi" to Autumn. Additionally, this patient lost some belongings, and while they were never located, Autumn spent significant time trying to locate the items following the path of the patient's stay.

Brian Reusch, Pharmacy - Late on a Friday, a patient required urgent assistance for Coumadin dosing, and Brian quickly responded to the need and then reached out to the patient to offer further guidance. Brian takes the time to ensure patients feel well informed about their medication and is compassionate in his approach.

Others nominated this month include Lydia Sweitzer, Lindsay Bader, Polly Maltry, Amanda McIntosh, Lucy Roloff, Heather Hawkins, Adrienne Mallegni, Ashley Woodruff, Jennifer Kerchner, Shelby Rodriguez, Natalie Lyon, Samantha Spearman, and Rebecca Jacobs.

Continue Delivering Excellence: Every Patient, Every Time! Take PRIDE in what you do at FHN!

Please keep your eyes open for others demonstrating our PRIDE standards and nominate them for PRIDE Champion or our Golden Globe recognition program for leaders! Be sure to include details in your nomination to ensure their excellence is portrayed as you have witnessed it. Thank you!

This is also the time of the July – August Green Corn Ceremony, performed by some Oklahoma tribes as a time of renewal. The ceremony involves participation in sweat lodge ceremonies, dances, offerings, and fasting.

Members of the Northern Cree, Ojibwa, and Algonkians tribes celebrate the last full moon in August with the August Native Wild Rice Harvest.

The August Hopi Snake Dance requires two weeks of ritual preparation and snakes are gathered and kept watch over by children. The dancers then take an emetic and dance with the snakes in their mouths, with an Antelope priest in attendance. After the dance, the snakes are released to carry their prayers.

People of the Wiccan faith celebrate Lugnasad on August 1. Its name is taken from the Celtic god Lugh, or Samildananch, which means “he of many gifts.” It celebrates the ancient festival of the first harvesting of grain in August.

August 1 is Confederation Day in Switzerland. It was decreed in 1891, but the origins of this holiday date back to 1291, when the foundation of the Swiss Confederation was laid.

The people of Macedonia celebrate Ilinden on August 2. The day commemorates the Macedonians’ revolt against the Ottoman army on August 2, 1903, on Ilinden, or St. Elijah’s Day.

Canada, Japan, and the United States observe Hiroshima Day on August 6. This solemn day commemorates the day that the U.S. dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945. People from different backgrounds unite on this day to declare their commitment to never letting another nuclear bomb be used against humans again.
