Nine Schools Get FHN Miles and Minutes Cash |
|
Nine area schools received checks from FHN this fall, thanks to their dedicated fans who counted their exercise minutes through the summer with FHN’s Miles and Minutes program.
Together, exercisers logged enough activity (for the contest, miles were normalized to help ensure a more level playing field for schools of all sizes) to equate to 177,738.5 miles – that’s the equivalent of more than 7 times around the Equator!
FHN’s Miles and Minutes encouraged participants to be active and log various types of physical activity to win prize money for the school of their choice.
Miles and Minutes winners were chosen in two main categories – miles per school system (normalized based on the number of students in each school system to help ensure that all schools had an equal chance to win, no matter their size or how many participants they enlist) and average miles per participant. The winners are:
Miles per School System:
Tri-County Christian, with 80,152.85 miles ($2,000)
Immanuel Lutheran, with 32,063.14 miles ($1,000)
Dakota, with 12,536.19 miles ($500)
Average Miles per Participant:
Pearl City, with 310.88 miles per participant ($2,000)
Lena-Winslow, with 255.30 miles per participant ($1,000)
West Carroll, with 238.22 miles per participant ($500)
Schools that did not win a prize in the two main categories were eligible for Sweepstakes prizes. This year’s winners are:
Warren – $500
River Ridge – $400
Eastland – $300
The free program had 283 participants who logged all types of exercise from May 27 through August 25. |

The United States celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month in September. Initiated in 1968 as “National Hispanic Heritage Week” but established in 1988 by the U.S. Congress, Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 because this day marks the anniversary of independence for five Hispanic countries – Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico achieved independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18. Latinos from all across the nation take a moment to reflect on their history, customs, and culture, as well as the contributions their people have made to the United States.
Several Indigenous tribes celebrate the September Sunrise Dance in September. This is an ancient rite of passage for 14-year-old girls and lasts four days. After a girl’s first menstruation, the girl is massaged and prayed for by an elder female relative. Then, the girl’s family decides which ceremony will be sponsored, which medicine man to choose, and whom to ask to be her godparents and co-sponsors of the ceremony.
The people of Germany begin the celebration of Oktoberfest on September 21. Originally meant to be just a simple horse race event, the Bavarian character quickly took over and it became a happy gathering of cheerful beer drinkers. The Oktoberfest attracts approximately 7 million visitors each year and lasts for three weeks.
September 22 is Mabon for people of the Wiccan faith. The day celebrates the fall equinox and the end of the harvest season. Apples are juiced for cider and grapes for wine.
People of the Shinto faith in Japan observe Shuki sorei sai on September 22. On this Autumnal Equinox Day, people honor family ancestry, visiting ancestral graves and having family reunions.
In Mexico, September 22 is the Chichen Itza Festival. During the Autumn Equinox, thousands gather at the Mayan temple of Kukulkan to see the interplay of sun and shadow as it forms the impression of a long-tailed serpent leading downward to the stone head of the serpent Kukulkan.
The people of the Dominican Republic and Peru celebrate Our Lady of Las Mercedes on September 24. Celebrations are held in honor of the virgin in Carhuaz, Peru, with traditional processions, bands of musicians, bullfights, and fireworks. In the Dominican Republic, a procession is held at the site of the 16th century shrine of Our Lady of Las Mercedes, where Columbus fought a battle against the Indians and the Virgin Mary appeared to him.
September 24 is Heritage Day for the people of South Africa. The holiday celebrates cultural diversity and serves as a time for South Africans of various heritages to strengthen bonds.
