FHN Community Festival of Trees Has Begun

The public is invited to take some time this holiday season to view the FHN Community Festival of Trees entrants at the Freeport Public Library.

The FHN Community Festival of Trees brings organizations from across the area to decorate holiday trees, with cash prizes awarded by a panel of judges and the public. This year's FHN Festival of Trees theme is from the 2003 movie Elf: “The best way to spread holiday cheer is singing loud for all to hear!”

The Community Festival of Trees is on display free at the Freeport Public Library now through Monday, Dec. 30. The Freeport Public Library is located at 100 E. Douglas Street in Freeport.

The public is encouraged to vote for the People's Choice Award winner through Saturday, Dec. 14. The top vote-getter for People's Choice will take home $500. The second-place award for People’s Choice is $200 and the third-place People’s Choice award is $100. Ballots are available at the library and votes will be taken through the end of the library's operating hours (10 a.m. - 3 p.m.) on Saturday, Dec. 14.

The formal panel of judges will award three prizes, as well: First prize is $500, second prize is $300 and third prize is $150.

Congratulations to October 2024's FHN PRIDE Champions!

Susie Rednour, Med-Surg, was nominated by Lisa Glass. Lisa describes a situation in which Susie was caring for patient who was undergoing chemotherapy. The patient was self-conscious of the hair loss she was experiencing and asking Susie about her hat she was wearing. The next day, Susie brought in a handful of scrub hats for the patient to have. The patient was so thankful and wore them every day during her stay. She said she felt much better than being “half bald.” Thank you Susie for going beyond to make the patient feel good.

Crystal Winters, admission nurse, was nominated by Lisa Glass. Crystal was admitting a patient recently who was known to have lice. During the admission, Crystal educated the couple on how to manage the lice at home. They were limited on income and were concerned about the cost of the supplies she described. Crystal went to the store over her lunch break and came back with everything they would need to take care of things at home including shampoos and furniture sprays. This is going beyond expectations for a patient and they were lucky to have Crystal as their admitting nurse that day.

Lois Stultz, CNA in the OB department, was nominated by Melissa Larson. Melissa describes a situation in which a patient came to FHN for care who did not deliver at FHN; however was needing care for preeclampsia. The patient was struggling to get the necessary follow-up appointment with her primary OB provider to have her blood pressure checked. Several phone calls were made between social services and complex care since the patient is out of network, but Lois is the real MVP. Lois got to work on the phone early in her shift with the organization she delivered. At one point Lois was on hold for half an hour, gave her direct line for contact and had to work through at least three more calls to get the patient the follow-up appointment she needed. If Lois would not have taken the time to make multiple calls and wait on hold, the patient would not have been seen. Thank you Lois for making the patient follow-up a big priority and taking the burden off the patient when she did not feel well and is caring for her newborn and other children.

Others nominated this month include: Martiny McClellan, Kendra Lindsey, Lydia Sweitzer, Sue Harmon, Becky Holbert, Sheena Masson, Tina Lingle, Ted Barkley, Lillie Rowan, Alivia Chamberlain, Samantha Spearman, Isabel Jones, Laurie Williams, Cortney Miller, Deb Siegmeier, Nickie Branch, Sam Helbing, Diane Kunz, Pam Johnson, Doug Kohn, and Amber Beyer-Lerch.

Continue Delivering Excellence: Every Patient, Every Time! Take PRIDE in what you do at FHN!

Please keep your eyes open for others demonstrating our PRIDE standards and nominate them for PRIDE Champion or our Golden Globe recognition program for leaders! Be sure to include details in your nomination to ensure their excellence is portrayed as you have witnessed it. Thank you!

November is National Indigenous Month in the United States. Since 1900, many have sought to recognize the great influence American Natives have had on the history, cultural development, and continuing growth of the U.S. Various dates and weeks were acknowledged until 1976, when Congress authorized a week in October as Native American Awareness Week. Finally, in 1990, the month of November was chosen because it is traditionally a time when many American Natives gather for fall harvest festivals, world-renewal ceremonies, and pow wows.

December is Universal Human Rights Month. Some of the rights are: No one shall be subjected to cruel and inhuman punishment; being entitled to a fair and public hearing by an impartial tribunal; the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects; the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; and the right to a standard of living to include food, clothing, housing, medical care, and necessary social services; the right to education; the right to participate in the cultural life of the community; not being arbitrarily deprived of their property; a speedy juried trial and the right to legal counsel.

Today (November 28) is Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Early American settlers gave thanks for good harvests by decorating their churches with fruits and vegetables and celebrating dinner with venison and waterfowl.

The United States celebrates Rosa Parks Day on December 1, which commemorates the arrest of Rosa Parks, in 1955, for defying segregation by refusing to give up her seat on the bus for a white passenger. The incident led to the end of segregation.

December 1 is the First Sunday of Advent for Christians around the world. The Christian church year begins with Advent (from the Latin adventus, meaning coming or arrival) which is also a time when Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ.
